Artist Statement

Xaverine M A Bates is a multi-disciplinary artist exploring themes of gender, motherhood, mental health and eco-feminism. She completed her BA Fine Art at Brighton University in 2008 and has been practising since then in East Sussex. She also has a degree in Philosophy & Anthropology, lived in Mexico for 2½ years and is married to an Icelander with whom she has one daughter.

She is currently coordinating The Mother Lode Project, which aims to extract the gold from challenging experiences of motherhood by giving opportunities for artists who are mothers to work with those who may be experiencing mental health difficulties as a result of motherhood. To be held at the De La Warr Pavilion in 2019.
